00:00:01.060 --> 00:00:05.679
One of the things that's been top of mind for me lately is the power of updates.

00:00:06.200 --> 00:00:10.189
Companies that have been through Techstars, do a phenomenal job of sending out updates.

00:00:10.400 --> 00:00:13.070
It's part of the program, it's part of the culture.

00:00:13.509 --> 00:00:15.519
And it is that way for a reason.

00:00:16.019 --> 00:00:20.164
One of the reasons is that we are all subject to recency bias.

00:00:20.664 --> 00:00:24.024
If I haven't heard from you in a while, I've probably forgotten about you.

00:00:24.204 --> 00:00:26.484
And I might think, oh, what was that company with...

00:00:26.634 --> 00:00:28.583
the thing that did the stuff...

00:00:28.583 --> 00:00:30.452
in the market about things.

00:00:30.929 --> 00:00:31.829
And out it goes.

00:00:32.320 --> 00:00:33.759
This is just part of being a human.

00:00:34.509 --> 00:00:40.411
One of the things that a regular update does, is it helps you stay recent in somebody's memory.

00:00:41.161 --> 00:00:45.447
For companies that have investors you should be sending investor updates at least on a quarterly basis.

00:00:45.996 --> 00:00:51.356
If you're out fundraising, you should be sending updates on a very regular basis, at least every other week.

00:00:52.137 --> 00:00:57.226
After you've raised money, it's great to keep investors updated, even in between raises.

00:00:57.686 --> 00:01:00.737
This could be monthly, it could be quarterly, find the right cadence.

00:01:01.036 --> 00:01:03.197
But what it does is it keeps you top of mind.

00:01:03.896 --> 00:01:05.066
I'll share an example with you.

00:01:05.617 --> 00:01:08.227
I received a one-off update from a local founder.

00:01:08.406 --> 00:01:13.703
I had met with her over coffee, we talked about the business, and then I hadn't thought about her business for a while.

00:01:14.165 --> 00:01:19.179
She was not in the habit of sending out updates, but she did send a one-off update over the summer.

00:01:19.409 --> 00:01:22.750
And I had just met with an investor who would be a great fit for her.

00:01:22.959 --> 00:01:24.700
So I immediately made that connection.

00:01:25.700 --> 00:01:29.909
What I'm suggesting is that you add this to your regular cadence.

00:01:30.239 --> 00:01:34.694
Send it out at least once a quarter, to stay top of mind with potential investors.

00:01:35.486 --> 00:01:49.466
I alluded to this yesterday, but the world that we're in right now, is so heavily dependent on follow on investment, that you are going to need, not only to keep your current investors updated, but to keep other seed investors close to you, and stay on top of them.

00:01:50.466 --> 00:01:56.972
Finally, there is an age old saying,"lines, not dots." This is attributed to Marc Seuster.

00:01:57.302 --> 00:02:00.722
And really what that means is if we've met once I've got a dot.

00:02:01.263 --> 00:02:03.123
If we've met twice, I've got a line.

00:02:03.623 --> 00:02:09.112
If you're sending me regular updates, I can continue to draw that line in a positive direction.

00:02:09.927 --> 00:02:13.108
Consistency of the updates is better than thoroughness of updates.

00:02:13.437 --> 00:02:17.038
Get them out, send them out on a regular basis and keep them going.
