192. Startup Maxims: Ask for Money, Get Advice

Text your thoughts directly to Rich.

This week I'm covering startup maxims — those little phrases we all repeat to each other as common wisdom but may or may not be true, helpful, or relevant.

Today's maxim: "Ask for money, get advice. Ask for advice, get money."

This is Rich Maloy with SpringTime Ventures, bringing you the VC Minute, quick advice to help startup founders fundraise better.

00:00:09.657 --> 00:00:15.477
This week I'm going to cover something that I've wanted to do for a while: startup maxims.

00:00:15.977 --> 00:00:20.664
But first, I can confidently say that our sponsor is a financial game changer.

00:00:20.963 --> 00:00:27.173
AVL Growth provides fractional finance and accounting services to companies pivoting from growth to scale.

00:00:27.698 --> 00:00:35.006
At AVL, they have a mindful growth approach and a proven methodology that are pivotal in making the right moves at the right time.

00:00:35.506 --> 00:00:40.875
Head to AVLgrowth.com and explore how they can be pivotal to your growth.

00:00:41.636 --> 00:00:42.985
AVL Growth Partners.

00:00:43.386 --> 00:00:44.405
Your success.

00:00:44.706 --> 00:00:45.905
Their expertise.

00:00:46.956 --> 00:01:07.251
What spurred me into action on this theme was that one of Eric Marcoullier's Thunderview CEO dinners, and we were talking about the maxim ask for money, get advice, ask for advice, get money." A founder said,"I'm asking for advice, but I'm still not getting any money." And I didn't have an answer for him.

00:01:07.751 --> 00:01:09.701
So I had to reflect on it for a while.

00:01:10.751 --> 00:01:14.831
I was thinking a lot about what is really at the heart of the matter.

00:01:15.432 --> 00:01:19.602
The first line,"ask for money, get advice" is really straightforward.

00:01:20.052 --> 00:01:21.371
I do give advice a lot.

00:01:21.888 --> 00:01:25.938
I was just on a call with the founder who was asking for money, it was a pitch after all.

00:01:26.465 --> 00:01:29.135
And I ended up giving him a lot of advice about the pitch.

00:01:29.706 --> 00:01:30.936
It needed a lot of work.

00:01:31.686 --> 00:01:38.286
But then I had to think, when has someone come to me asking for advice and gotten money as a result?

00:01:38.956 --> 00:01:43.305
That path is less straightforward and is really where the maxim breaks down.

00:01:44.305 --> 00:01:45.536
Indulge me here for a moment.

00:01:45.536 --> 00:01:48.025
As I read a wonderful quote from Benjamin Franklin.

00:01:48.465 --> 00:01:52.665
And I feel like I should be reading this in some old timey accent, but I will spare you that.

00:01:53.415 --> 00:01:53.926
Here it is.

00:01:54.426 --> 00:02:01.816
He that has once done you a kindness will be more ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.

00:02:02.816 --> 00:02:10.756
The modern interpretation of this is,"if you want to make a friend, ask a favor." Asking for money as a transaction.

00:02:11.256 --> 00:02:14.376
Asking for advice is akin to asking for a favor.

00:02:15.376 --> 00:02:22.036
Someone that has done you a kindness may be more willing to do another kindness, such as make an introduction to another investor.

00:02:22.705 --> 00:02:25.765
And that to me is at the heart of the second half of this maxim.

00:02:26.455 --> 00:02:30.918
By asking for advice, what you're actually doing is building a relationship.

00:02:31.918 --> 00:02:34.828
Seed investing is very much about relationships.

00:02:35.548 --> 00:02:37.858
Those relationships may turn into investment.

00:02:38.427 --> 00:02:42.298
They may also turn into introductions that turn into an investment.

00:02:43.298 --> 00:02:47.798
So to the founder that sparked this discussion, focus on the relationship building.

00:02:48.298 --> 00:02:51.617
Ask for advice, and you may build a relationship from it.

00:02:52.117 --> 00:02:55.943
Continue with that relationship and it may lead to an investment.
