00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:07.959
Today I have a more personal lesson that is specific to this raise but still carries some valuable insights.
00:00:08.980 --> 00:00:22.399
For all of my talk about the pool party, getting your lead investor to jump in the pool first splash around and shout about how much fun they're having in order to get other investors in the pool, I was largely unsuccessful in doing this.
00:00:23.399 --> 00:00:30.972
The round ended up being SpringTime, a large local angel group, Clocktower Ventures and Service Provider Capital.
00:00:31.643 --> 00:00:36.383
These are all great folks to have in your round, especially for a FinTech with a local business angle.
00:00:37.042 --> 00:00:43.923
But we didn't fill the full round and that was largely due to something that I haven't talked about yet: momentum.
00:00:44.923 --> 00:00:46.243
Here's the full timeline.
00:00:47.003 --> 00:00:50.393
We first started helping Moxey raise in Q2 of 2022.
00:00:50.942 --> 00:00:57.423
The SpringTime process enables us to get to a yes, whether or not there's a lead in place, we then go out and help them find a lead.
00:00:58.173 --> 00:01:03.813
The whole second half of 2022 was one of the worst fundraising environments in nearly a decade.
00:01:04.129 --> 00:01:05.299
It was a complete wash.
00:01:06.049 --> 00:01:13.640
By December of 2022, we decided to step up and lead and started talking to other funds about Moxey again in early 2023.
00:01:14.140 --> 00:01:17.680
Another fund, stepped up to co-lead in February of 2023.
00:01:18.069 --> 00:01:21.519
And we were happy to have them as they had a practice of leading.
00:01:22.359 --> 00:01:27.819
With an experienced co-lead, we amped up our outreach efforts for all of Q1 last year.
00:01:28.569 --> 00:01:32.409
That other fund sat on their hands for the next four months.
00:01:32.909 --> 00:01:38.459
That's a story for another time and a painful mistake on my part, that will take more than a few minutes to unpack.
00:01:38.530 --> 00:01:39.609
We're going to skip that for now.
00:01:40.250 --> 00:01:46.769
By the time we were negotiating the term sheet, it was Q3, and then that fund killed the deal internally.
00:01:47.370 --> 00:01:48.900
And they nearly killed the company.
00:01:49.650 --> 00:01:54.180
SpringTime stepped back up as the sole lead investor in September of 2023.
00:01:55.180 --> 00:02:01.810
So imagine you're another VC and this tiny fund has been talking to you about the same startup for the last year and a half.
00:02:02.200 --> 00:02:06.370
They had a lead, the lead dropped out and now that tiny fund is leading by themselves.
00:02:06.579 --> 00:02:08.949
Where's this fund-based oh, they're in Colorado?
00:02:09.099 --> 00:02:10.240
What are they high?
00:02:11.240 --> 00:02:17.750
By Q4 of last year, some funds were hearing about Moxey from us for the third or fourth time.
00:02:18.419 --> 00:02:21.719
To say that's a bad signal would be an understatement.
00:02:22.719 --> 00:02:35.680
To extend the pool party analogy, I was in that dang pool for so long that I was shriveled like a grape, my teeth were chattering from the cold, and my voice was hoarse from shouting for a year straight about how much fun I was having.
00:02:36.430 --> 00:02:38.159
Not exactly a good look.
00:02:39.199 --> 00:02:46.759
One of the roles of a lead investor is to be that person in the pool, to build that momentum that will bring other investors in.
00:02:47.509 --> 00:02:50.780
The momentum on this round went in the opposite direction.
00:02:51.560 --> 00:02:54.439
We managed to get it done, but only just barely.
00:02:55.159 --> 00:03:03.979
I made a critical mistake of underestimating the signal that other funds derived from that ridiculously long, drawn out timeline.
00:03:04.650 --> 00:03:07.680
This is why the best fundraisers have a tight process.
00:03:08.009 --> 00:03:12.389
They build that momentum, turn that momentum into signatures, and then they're done.
00:03:13.139 --> 00:03:19.439
If there is a next time that SpringTime leads, you better believe that we're going to run a tight process and that will be that.
