00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:08.256
This is Rich Maloy with SpringTime Ventures, bringing you the VC Minute, quick advice to help startup founders fundraise better.

00:00:09.010 --> 00:00:10.121
Welcome back everyone.

00:00:10.601 --> 00:00:17.710
I'm a little delayed getting these episodes out as I'm still recovering from a nasty cold that I just could not seem to shake for days.

00:00:18.210 --> 00:00:24.815
Funny enough, I tried to use the AI generated voice, and it was unsettling to hear.

00:00:25.414 --> 00:00:29.271
It sounded like me, but completely wooden and without any inflection.

00:00:29.810 --> 00:00:35.180
So instead you have my slightly stuffed up in slightly deeper than normal voice for this intro.

00:00:35.850 --> 00:00:39.121
One change for this season is the addition of a sponsor.

00:00:39.621 --> 00:00:43.006
I can confidently say that our sponsor is a financial game changer.

Your success.

00:01:07.048 --> 00:01:08.248
Their expertise.

00:01:09.298 --> 00:01:17.158
For the next two weeks, we're going to feature SpringTime partner, Jeff Gardner, as he shares his wisdom from his recently published book,"Love Your People".

00:01:17.658 --> 00:01:20.537
Jeff is not the guy that goes from zero to one.

00:01:21.108 --> 00:01:25.457
He's the guy that takes a company from 10 to a thousand and then sells it.

00:01:26.207 --> 00:01:29.897
He has three exits under his belt, all for companies that he didn't found.

00:01:30.397 --> 00:01:33.668
He's also a wonderful human being who loves his people.

00:01:34.168 --> 00:01:35.067
Take it away, Jeff.

00:01:36.067 --> 00:01:40.227
My name is Jeff Gardner and I get to work with SpringTime Ventures.

00:01:40.658 --> 00:01:42.768
My background is interesting.

00:01:42.778 --> 00:01:51.810
My father was an entrepreneur, and he struggled to make payroll and all the thing that goes along with bootstrapping your own business.

00:01:52.099 --> 00:01:55.909
So his dream for me was to go work for big, safe companies.

00:01:56.269 --> 00:01:59.000
I started out with GE did the stint there.

00:01:59.344 --> 00:02:03.515
I worked for a very large telecom company and also Avaya.

00:02:04.135 --> 00:02:10.918
And it was at Avaya where I got my experience to start an incubator group where I got to start new businesses.

00:02:11.427 --> 00:02:14.656
We bought, start ed and built four businesses.

00:02:15.156 --> 00:02:21.566
And that's really where I got the passion for building and growing businesses within inside the safety of this larger company.

00:02:22.186 --> 00:02:28.355
Then we did PaySimple which was a Denver based payments company is now traded on NASDAQ under EverCommerce.

00:02:28.786 --> 00:02:31.659
And then did a turnaround for our private equity group.

00:02:31.659 --> 00:02:38.068
Then spent a lot of time as CEO of a company called Zen Planner, which was boutique fitness software.

00:02:38.568 --> 00:02:43.598
Now I spend my time as exec chairman on five different software companies.

00:02:44.348 --> 00:03:08.330
I just released a book called"Love Your People, A Guide to Entrepreneurial Leadership." As I was working with CEOs and helping them grow their businesses, we came across different topics that we would discuss and they said,"that's great, would you write that down?" And so I started building modules of information that was helpful in really short form for CEOs to build out their business.

00:03:08.659 --> 00:03:11.030
And then ultimately sort of organize it into a book.

00:03:11.580 --> 00:03:15.580
And it centers around the people aspect.

00:03:15.990 --> 00:03:22.759
Because at the end of the day, when as an investor, we invest in the people and not the product or the industry.

00:03:23.150 --> 00:03:26.969
And we want to make sure we've got the right people that we're putting our money behind.

00:03:27.625 --> 00:03:35.270
We found there's a set of dimensions or criteria or behaviors that we see in successful entrepreneurs.

00:03:35.927 --> 00:03:44.388
Fundamentally the belief behind this is if you take great care of your people and you set them up for success, they will take amazing care of their customers.

00:03:44.717 --> 00:03:48.302
And it will be a successful profitable business.

00:03:48.603 --> 00:03:51.353
And everybody gets outsized returns in those situations.
